Just back from a lovely sunset drive.

In addition to Gemsbok and Springbok, we had lots and lots of the good nocturnal stuff:

Springhare
Scrubhare
Jackal
Bat eared fox
Cape fox
Spotted eagle owl

We took a tip-off and went looking for lions at Leeuwdril. They had moved on, but our trip was rewarded by a pair of porcupines in the road! Fantastic night.

Morning drive tomorrow...

Our morning drive was fantastic today!

Started off with a Cape Fox in the road.

Then near Houmoed, we watched some Gemsbok and then caught sight of some nervous Springbok, so I left the gemsbok to investigate.

Two young female cheetahs! Very unusual, and they were scent marking a cluster of trees.

We stayed with them and one jumped high up into a tree.

When they went over a dune, they flushed out a very panicked African Wild Cat!

I'll post photos to my trip report soon...

We also spent some quality time with ground squirrels and watched some gemsbok fighting.

Looking forward to the sunset drive tonight!

LQ:  Amazing amazing amazing! I'm a lot

So tonight's sunset drive was pretty epic. Everything was at the Twee Rivieren gate! For those who assume that TR is too busy and you need to speed away from it to see things, this one is for you...

As soon as we entered the park, we saw a traffic jam. I asked around and it seems this was another of those, 'everybody is stopped and nobody knows why' things. One car mentioned there were four cheetahs hiding under a bush. We waited a few minutes and eventually they emerged. Awesome.

My guests were very happy to sit and chat up in the dunes, so there was much time spent just stopped and alternating between talking and listening to the bush.

A few little things along the Auob road, like springhares.

On the road back to TR, I heard something by the road and we stopped. Just caught the tiniest glimpse of a porcupine before it just became rustling bushes.

We stopped to look at the Twee Rivieren waterhole and didn't see anything, but just as we were about to leave, we spotted a Brown Hyena drinking!! How on earth did I miss that??

Always fun unlocking the gate in the presence of large carnivores.

It was a good night. Here's our sightings:

Gemsbok
Springbok
African Wild Cat
Scrubhare
Springhare
Porcupine
Cheetah
Brown Hyena

Hello! Today's sightings board:

Lions at Leeuwdril and Dalkieth
Cheetahs at Twee Rivieren
Giraffes at Montrose

I've got a sunset and a night drive tonight as well as a morning drive tomorrow, so there should be much to report!

An absolutely magnificent night tonight in KTP. We had both a sunset and a night drive.

The sunset drive ended with a leopard! At first, I thought it was a big lioness far away, before realizing it was actually a small leopard very close. She walked alongside the car for a while before choosing to cross the road right in front of us. Breathtaking.

Had a wonderful surprise on the night drive when my guests turned out to be really fun people i’d taken on a drive in Nossob.

We had fantastic sightings of some of the general stuff and managed to find the leopard again! This time, she was playing in a huge tree- the sort of tree you always think there should be a leopard in.

But further down the road, we had a sighting big enough to outshine even a first KTP leopard. And everyone agreed.

We saw two jackals taking on a Polecat! Despite the polecat being tiny, it stood up to those jackals with its tail curled up and chased them off after a few very exciting minutes. Aposematic colouring for the win. Polecats are the new Honey Badger. Or the new Chuck Norris.

I’ve done some research and it seems the polecat is so confident that its smell will deter predators, that it’s often killed on roads because it ‘stands its ground’ even against cars.

It was an unforgettable night here.

So here are the sightings...

Sunset Drive:

Gemsbok
Springbok
Steenbok
Jackal
Bat Eared Fox
Leopard
Springhare

Night Drive:

Gemsbok
Springbok
Steenbok
Jackal
Cape Fox
Bat Eared Fox
Springhare
Scrubhare
Small Spotted Genet
Polecat
Leopard
Spotted Eagle Owl
