Hi - we have stayed at Biyamiti many times. It is a lovely little bush camp. The private road is a real bonus and we have seen both lion and leopard on this road on countless occasions. We have also seen the dwarf elephant who happens to frequent this area. Friends of our still hold the record for the most number of leopard seen on a night drive from Biyamit - 7 different leopard - whilst they were out viewing them a leopard disembowelled an impala in a tree overhanging the fence right outside No. 6. There have been other occasions where we have stayed there but seen very little - it is all in the luck of the draw! Just be careful on the narrow private road when encountering elephant - we have had some rather unnerving experiences! Watch out for the resident genets inside the camp too.

Peterv, I think Biyamiti will pleasantly surprise you. It is a great camp. Has 220v electricity. Crocbridge is not to far away in case you need a shop or petrol. Wood and ice are sold at the camp itself.
Advice: Contact the camp beforehand and put in a request to stay in one of the units from nr. 1 to 9.
Been there many times and have seen a lot (from wild dogs on the access route to lions in the river bed in front of our unit, twice)

Mentioned it before: Biyamiti is our favourite bush camp. Have seen sooo many things in this riverbed.
During maroela season the elllies come to eat at the trees right next to the fence. During winter months the ellies dig waterholes that are used by many animals.
Our highlight at Biyamiti was a pride of lions in the riverbed, right in front of our unit, 18:00 late afternoon.

All the units, from nr.1 to 9, have the same view of the river.
Number 15 is also nice. Although it has no river view, you are tucked away in the bush - you see nobody and nobody can see you.
But for a first time visit, take a river view unit.

The first photo was taken several years ago, might have been about 1998. It was a big pride and it was amazing to see all these lions on the rocks.

The photo of the hippo was taken in January 2005. These hippos really gave us a fright. Driving next to the weir you cannot really see what awaits you ahead because of the reeds, and suddenly there was this clearing and the hippos splashed in the water because they also got a fright. We switched of the car (closed the window) and sat there for a while. At one stage their curiosity got the better of them and they came up to right next to the car, was definitely the closest we have been to a hippo and a remarkable sighting.

The last photo I think was taken in 2001. Was on the S114, just after you get the first turnoff for the loop before the weir. I think it would be safe to say that this big pride was the same as those we saw in 1998. This was also a great sighting. We sat with the pride for a very long time before another vehicle approached.

Except for these two lion sightings, we had several more in the area around the weir.

Some other interesting sightings at the weir:
3 different types of raptors fighting over a very long snake that was caught by one.
After some heavy rains, we saw how the Biyamiti river came down in flood. The water was actually making a huge bow as is went over the weir.

When in this area, we always give the weir a visit.
