Hi bushguy, as far as I can recall #40 seems to be the best one for all you require.
Enjoy!

Best to phone the camp or send a fax 2 weeks before your arrival and then  :D

I know that there have been numerous requests for favourites budget 4 bed tents, but would like to know which is a good one for December. We are three sisters and love Tamboti. The last two times we were allocated tent no. 3 which was fine. A bit far from ablutions and the view not the greatest.

Do not want to sound fussy and have read that no. 22 as a firm favourite. However, is it not a bit too noisy being too close to the ablutions? The view looks lovely, so any suggestions anyone?

I have stayed in 21 and 22, both are awesome IMO. The only time that I had noise was when I stayed in unit 10, but that was noise from units 11,12 and 13, not the ablutions. I believe that unit 1 is cool.

Hi Marge, we just spent 4 nights in 22 from 5-9 August. The position in relation to ablutions was superb (not to far), and there was absolutely no noise polution from the ablutions or people walking too and from the ablutions. The view of the river is better than 23, but no vegitation in the river at present so things were quite. Besides being quite, the view is unobstructed and amazing. We had a resident genet at the unit and the preverbial terrorist (the badger) visit regularly. Hyena on the fence every night and lots of birds. The only consideration is that you can see unit 23, but it did not detract from the experience. Any unit would be great and I am sure you will enjoy the experince...

Hey Marge,

22 has an awesome view but doesn't have much shade in the mornings, so if shade is a priority you may want to consider another unit.

Hang around on this thread and I'm sure that you will get the best of both worlds.

Tent 23 is my favourite 2 beded unit. It is close to ablutions, very private and has a lovely view.

Leanawel, we stayed at number 33 last year. Number 34 seemed to be great. It is far from 33 and you can't even see 35 on the other side. Number 34 is also very close to the fence and I think the view should be super.

The tents are roughly all on the same level , they are all on platforms , some of the platforms are higher above the ground , with a more or less uniform gap of about 40 cm between the platform and the ground at the rear of the tents . The ground slopes away to varying degree towards the front of most of the tents (where the stairs and the patio are on the river view side) , depending on the terrain around a particular tent . Thus some tents have longer stilts (longest about 1 metre) at the front & have a longer staircase to access the platform - certain have just 2 or 3 steps , others have up to 7 or 8 (?) steps .

I hope this is helps ...

Is there someone stationed in the camp to assist with any problems - for example, if you find a snake in the tent - or do you have to contact Orpen??

Yes, there are staff quarters, but I would use the duty manager number anyway, or check during office hours what to do.

Can Tamboti guests use the Orpen swimming pool during the day??

I have done so.You might have missed the nonsense I wrote about a tunnel to use it at night.....

No

And lastly, any suggestions on good routes to drive in this area at that time of year?
H7 to Satara, Rabelais loop, Timbavati road to picnic site. Most roads deliver reasonably, but you could be very lucky, or not.

The H7 (Orpen - Satara tar road) is a great road :D

That's the s39 going to Timbavati Picnic Sight. Then down to Satara and back.

If I were you, I would skip the s140 and s145 roads South of Rabaleis Loop because its usually quiet with General game  Rather spend the best time of day (early morning and late afternoon) on the H7.

Take a look at the sightings pin up board to see where the Wild dogs that frequent the area are being seen! There is a pin up board at Tamboti by the one ablutions block, and at Orpen which is 900meters or so from the Tamboti/Maroela private road turn off.

If you being kept awake by lion or hyena, get out out of the tent and shine a torch into the riverbed that the tent overlooks. Perhaps you will be fortunate like I was

I have stayed in number 20 and we had a great view of the riverbed.
