I am planning a visit to Mapungubwe in August. I have read there is a venetia wild dog project in the Venetia Reserve, but it is unclear how one can participate. The email address on the website is not accurate and I prefer not to phone since I live in the USA.

Has anyone participated in this project? If so, I would greatly appreciate any details you might have, particularly how one books one of these morning walks. Since the reserve is near Mapungubwe, I am assuming one can stay there and meet the group somewhere?

Venetia is right next to Mapungubwe NP, so traveling between the two should be no problem.

But it is not part of the park itself, and belongs to De Beers mining company. As such we cannot discuss that reserve on this Forum. Sorry!

After seeing your post on the Venetia wild dog projects I decided to call them as we are also visiting Mapungubwe in the near future.

Sadly, the wild dogs are no longer at Venetia = I was told that they move the dogs around, some to Kruger and other parks etc. (although it is still mentioned on the website)
They do however offer lion tracking as their lions are on collar, but cannot guarantee a sighting. Have a look here: http://www.diamondroute.co.za/diamond_route_venetia.htm

I have been told that wild dogs can be tracked at Mashatu in Botswana, but have not been there myself. Mashatu is approx half hour drive from Mapungubwe thru Bots border post.

I have heard of a similar reserve near Vaalwater in Limpopo, can try and get the info for you.

Thank you so much for your response. While disappointed the dogs are no longer there, I am going to spend more time in Southwest Kruger in hopes of at least one sighting. With only two weeks in So Africa this time, we decided to spend more time in each area and less time driving around so we will not be making it that far north.

It is very kind of you to offer to try to get more information on possible tracking near Limpopo but it appears we will not be able to do it this trip anyway.

You are more than welcome! We will be making an effort as we have recently moved to the Limpopo and wish to explore as much as possible.

Perhaps with your next visit to SA I will be able to give more info on the wild dogs, as it is also a desire of ours to track them down (with the help of their collars and the wardens off course!)
