Seen 18 November at Sable Dam. This ellie has lost both tusks, but the girth of the remaining stumps makes me think that he must have had some impressive ivory at one time and may be on record somewhere as a tusker. I have checked out the database for tuskers and have not been able to match him to anyone of those ellies.

Anyone with any suggestions?

Is that an elephant carcass in front of the ellie, or a mate taking a bath?

H e if it is like that then she have a great pair of tusks on her. No wonder he want's to impress. I think the disappointment is going to be huge however.

They may just both need medical attention. He should visit a dentist and she may have to go for a hip replacement.

Our last tusker which we saw this year - Not quite sure whether this is only one tusker or two different ones - Therefore I posted both together

Also on that part a couple of loops leading closer to the river can be driven and in one of these we spotted down in the riverbed of the Shingwedzi an elephant bull drinking from one of the remaining puddles.

Image

From where we stood with our car it was nearly impossible to take pictures without twisting most of our bodies. He carried on drinking as if this was everything what we had to do on that morning and we realized that he only had one thick and upright pointing left tusk.

Image

A shame was once more that our last full day was a bit quiet for our liking but as already said you cannot have it all especially after the very rewarding first weeks. On our way back to Bateleur I made the proposal to give the S101 a try and maybe Mr. Thick left tusker moved a bit and may would come across on that road and you can imagine that we looked more than a bit puzzled when a huge grey mass could be seen behind a mopane bush.

Image

It looked indeed as this was the one we saw earlier that morning in the riverbed although it was a bit annoying that right when we stopped an excessive rain shower came down and made the light a bit difficult.

Image

We realized a small notch in this right ear and he presented his very strange formed right tusk in a nice way.

Image

Image

Needless to say that the rain did not bother him in any way and he munched simply happily away

Image

and was one of the gentler giants and seemed to feel not disturbed by us in any way.

Image

The minute the rain shower stopped Mr. elephant walked off.

Hi Aat..........welcome home, and hope kruger was kind to you!!!

When you've regained your breath, please could you look at these lovely ellies, and see if anyone of them may be a known or promising tusker. I'm guessing that they're not, but no harm in asking!!

Apologies for the bad photos!!
They were all seen around the Letaba/Phalaborwa/Mopani triangle.
Some of them may even be the same ellie!!

H. erectus,
Back from trip and was just looking at the posts here ...(what else..?) Just before I left I assumed your pics were made recently and like Okie he looks a lot like Masthulele...but... pics are from the seventies.
I took my time and checked your pics again ....result is that the one you photographed in the seventies was Kambaku.
You are more then welcome to send these pics to me to update Kambaku's page , he was one of the Magnificent 7 !!

Pumbaa,
I am afraid the bulls on your pics are not named tuskers.
I have to add a comment on this... I was recently in Mopani and Shingwedzi area and I was surprized about the number of bulls with promising tusks... I also had to admit they are not named (yet) but for future promising.
I will add a story about them later and will post some here too. Just when you see a (big) tusker next to the promising ones you really can see the difference in size. I know by looking at these promising ones from a distance or from certain angles the tusks look impressive.

My comment is also for the other set of pics you posted.

Although knowing that Aat is away I will start continuing in posting our tusker or at least promising tusker sghtings - not to forget about one......

At Nshawu 3 we made a break as we saw far in the distance two ellie bulls approaching this waterhole and as same was far enough away from where we parked we let them come closer.

Although in this case we were even a bit sad that the sighting took place so far away as both looked like very promising tuskers to me.

Meanwhile it was once more extreme hot and humid and the weather reminded me on last year’s one where we drove exactly the same drive and where heaven opened the gates over night and flooded the Shingwedzi river……..That explained also the flickering heat which made the photography a bit like a challenge.

I simply copied the part out of my trip report.
