The tar roads you mention Nicolette are good for the doggies, which I have seen more on tar than on gravel, but they also like the S25.

I will always go for the gravel roads,if you drive at the usual snail pace, very little dust and most of the times you get the sightings all to yourself. Some of my best cat sightings have been on gravel roads.

It all depends on what you want to get out of Kruger. Some chase after the big 5 in as little time as possible whilst others are after the peace and quietness of the backroads. The S50 is not a favourite of many, but this road, due to the lack of vehicles, gives me the feeling of being in the wild. It affords me the opportunity to stop under a tree, open windows and just listen to the sounds of raw Africa.

We are in Satara at present . The guy in the next bungalow drives what must be the shiniest 4 x 4 Pajero I have ever seen :) Not a speck of dust on that vehicle - I think he does not drive gravel , stays on tar , and right in the very middle too :hmz:

Kanniedood it is. My experience is that a lot of people turn around at the dam or at the Dipeni outpost and go back to Shing.

Dirt roads anytime, (especially in the south) the game viewing is about equal but the peace and quiet is priceless. The worse the condition of the road, the more attractive it is to me.

I am one of those that turns around at the outpost
Once the road turns away from the river the game decreases

Maybe we have been lucky, but after the outpost
we have had lions, reedbuck, roan etc....(all during midday heat)
SO and I both prefer gravel over tar, but will travel the
tar as well
