I've read somewhere that there is a breeding program to try to re-create the extinct quagga, but not, I think, under the auspices of SANParks. However, whilst driving along the Doornhoek loop in Karoo NP, I spotted these unusual "zebra", albeit at a very great distance. They might very well have been outside the park's boundary, but they sure were an interesting sighting (on what was an otherwise quite long and uneventful drive ). Does anyone know whether there is a quagga breeding program in the vicinity?

Arks, I haven't heard anything definite on where the project is located but did find something on the internet re it, not sure how relevant or up to date it is.

There was also an article in the Africa Geographic magazine about the Quagga project, but that was many years ago. As far as I can remember, the project launched at a small reserve in the western Cape. However, there was no follow up after the initial article in AG magazine.

Thanks, Elsa and Rooies. I also remember reading something a few years ago (might have been a NYTimes article) but I don't remember anything about the locale of the project either.

There was a Kwagga breeding project in the Karoo National Prk.

The quagga breeding program was mainly centred in the Karoo National Park , but they also had animals in Cape point National park , as well as in the Rhodes Memorial reserve ,on the front slopes of Table Mountain , above Groote Schuur hospital . In fact I think there are still some of them there and can be seen from the Eastern Boulevard when driving into Cape Town .
Haven't looked for them recently though , and cannot confirm .

on our last trip to Mokala (in april) the female guide told me that they, too try to "re-breed" the quagga within the population of their local zebra herds...I do have some fantastic video footage; if I find the time I might edit some of it and upload it

Haven't seen them at Rhodes Mem for a while now okie, but it might have something to do with me driving and having to look at the road occasionally.

You are right BB , neither have I . The place does seem somewhat overgrown too , and I think the animals have all been removed from there - maybe to Cape Point Nature reserve
