No luck , still displays size must be between ... I have messed up somewhere ... do you mean enter through them as click each box / leave them blank ?

How large is the avatar? (Right-click -> Properties)

If you really have to choose something choose Save interlaced.

OK 40 x 30 still gives 16 KiB , even at this size it is too small ... my current one is far larger .

Then you are definitely not saving as .gif.
My avatar is 3,07 KB (3.153 bytes).

Remember, the filename doesn't decide the file format, only the dropdown box does! So make sure you have the gif format selected before you save.

Did exactly as you said , in Gif too small ...

My avatar used to be full size but it is now smaller with white edges around it. How can I enlarge it so that it takes up the full available space?

My avatar was taken on top of a water reservoir which is about 2 km east of Ngotso waterhole , the reservoir pressurises the water pipeline between Olifants & Satara . The pipeline starts at the pump station alongside Balule . I was with a staff member when we saw elephants drinking from the overflow alongside the reservoir , the wind was in our favour and we climbed up the ladder on the side of the reservoir and watched the elephants about 2 metres below us untill they sensed us , one shook its head showering us with mud that it had been bathing in .

Hmmmm my avatar is of a cheetah if I can remember correctly, I chose it because the Cheetah is my favourite animal after witnessing first hand just outside of lower sabie a few years back how a cheetah with a broken leg and gashes of meat out of her still hunted by running on her elbows and still reached Full speed I was and still am in awe of the will power a cheetah posses and she does it with such Grace
