Seen at Lake Panic:

Looks like a male scarlet dropwing

DQ this is a Violet Dropwing (very descriptive if you look at it's colour )

at Lake Panic (Skukuza). I think it is the same species.

I have "extremely limited" (ie absolutely none) knowledge of these creatures.

hi Buffers, i am not an expert, just a bush lover with every book you can imagine. your pic could be a dropwing which is one of the most common dragonflies. there are more than ten species, varies from red, yellow, dull orange. males could be dull blue to violet. the small scarlet is also very common through summer.
red basker has characteristic red patch at base of hind wings, look very orange and is a pest around the pool when the kids try to swim. flight patterns differ

this is a Black Tailed Skimmer (Nesciotthemis farinosa)
The black on the tail sometimes has yellow splashes in the black but this disappears with age.
Frequents reed, sedge and grass lined margins of still and running water. ( info from "a field Guide to Dragonflies of South Africa by Warwick and Michele Tarboton)
