Hi to all,
We will visit SA in February and i have a question about car navigation systems.
Is it allowed by SA law to use a navigation system which shows the traffic cameras on the map?
Here in Germany it is forbidden to use it when driving.
Thanks in advance
Klaus

On some local radio stations they will give you the approximate locations of speed traps by announcing the area in which it is located, also there are traffic signs indicating that there could be possible speed traps. It is against the law to use any gadget that detects speed traps (radar). It is best to stick to the speed limit and then you do not have to worry about cameras.

My Garmin GPS sounds a beep when you approach a fixed speed camera, this has been programmed into the instrument and its not anything I have done, this has been handy on a few occasions, but its not fool proof and do not rely on it, I still get the odd surprise in the post from time to time.

As said above, stick to the speed limits, especially at slower zones, such as 80km/h zones.

Important!!! If you exceed the speed limit by more than 30km/h, no fine is issued. You will be arrested and taken to the police station where you will be kept until the next available court date, unless you get bail. The golden rule is, 60km/h in urban areas unless there is a sign indicating 75km/h. The same with the main roads, 100km/h and where allowed, 120km/h. To be 100% safe, stick to 60 in town and 100 on main roads. Don't rely on gadgets to keep you out of trouble. And don't pay any bribe to traffic officials. Some corrupt ones do take bribes but some will arrest you for bribery and speeding.

Hello,
Thanks to all for the answers and hints!
I don't want to speed, of course it is always better to stick to the limits, especally in foreign countrys.
My question is : I have a Tomtom GPS and on this device there is a database which knows where speed cameras etc are possible, is it allowed to have this, it is not a active system, only a database and you can switch it on and off.
If it is not allowed i have to delete this POis/Option from my GPS.
I have done this for Germany because here it is not allowed to have it installed on your GPS
@Bert, here in Germany it is allowed to go as fast as your car can on most of the highways :D
Regards
Klaus

I do not know what part of the country you will be visiting but conditions here are not the same as your autobahns. In some parts you do not meet or see anything for miles and miles but around the corner you can find cattle on the roads. At night time you might have a kudu jump on your car. People seem to amble all over the roads, and the worst are the minibus taxi's, it is really a dangerous place driving on our roads. The roads themselves have potholes and off of the main roads are a lot of dirt roads so be careful and I hope you have a great holiday and will make you want to return again and again. So stick to the speed limit and relax and enjoy.

@jad
Thanks for your reply.
Yes, i known SA and the road conditions there, because it's our 4th holiday there and we love it!
I drove more than 10000 kms in SA, without any speed fine.
It's only is it allowed to have a GPS with radar warnings with you, even if this warnings are not activated but installed on the device.
Thanks
Klaus

Hi Klaus, it seems that everyone that replied on your post do not really understand what you are actually asking hehehe. Unfortunately I do not have an answer for you, sorry. People, it seems that Klaus is a law abiding citizen who WILL drive savely and within the speed limit. All he wants to know is whether it is against the law just having the application on his gps that shows the positions of cameras. As far as I know it is not against the law but maybe someone can verify that please. Hope you get your answer Klaus!! :-)

Klaus, I have just spoken to a senior Public Prosecutor who confirms that it is NOT illegal to possess or use such a device. (In fact he has a phone with similar features) The traffic authorities however, are busy moving some of the traps to other places.
