I just watched CB on tv and saw the desturbing story of the wild dog trade around the world. Taking dogs from the wild and export them all over the world, and the fact that AWD is not even a cities list. Thats bad very bad.

I have just made a post about that on the cheetah or wild dog thread too.
They are not even Cites listed and can be exported almost at will.
There must be something that we as responsible people can do to try and stop it and help get them on the Cites list!
Let's hear what all forumites think about this situation.

I saw that as well tsetse vlieg. They said 100 years ago there were 500 000 wild dogs in the wild and today there are only 3000 left. Apparently there are 300 wild dogs in Chinese zoos, in other words 10% of wild dogs are currently in tiny cages in China! :( :(

Wild dogs are selling for approximately US$2500 each (transportation fees included).

I agree, they should be CITES listed!

In China they seem to want to tease them as they are kept in horrible, small cages and visitors seem to poke them with every possible object, even brooms!
In America they seem to breed them indiscriminately If one thinks about how widely a pack of wild dog roam, I cannot think that you can keep a big pack in a zoo. That is going to promote an ongoing trade!

I hope we get all information available before going off on this. Well directed comment to the right people will do a lot more than getting upset and ranting.

Carte Blanche's stories are usually well-researched and well-documented. Perhaps we should try and contact their producer and get as much information as possible. It really seemed quite important that as many people as possible do as much as possible as soon as possible!

Saw the doccie as well, not only wild dog involved, but all animals in minute cages and not well cared for. A kids even sitting on the back of a tiger. Bad news.

This world is a sick place. I was disgusted to see what these "humans" can get up to. The guys doing the trade should be the ones in little cages.

Agree with Sprocky, to most - where there is a buck to be made, morals mean absolutely blow all.

Correct, let them suffer like the animals in those small cages. If an animal is put in such a small cage it starts to develop some syndrome (cannot remember the correct word) where it starts to walk up and down the fence for hours, like a robot, aimlessly and listlessly. Their faces have no expression and they are just flesh and bone, their spirit gone.

It was shocking to read about a lion that was brought to SA from Europe where it was kept in a cage. When it was released on a farm in the eastern Free State, it was the first time in its life that its paws touched earth instead of cold concrete.

The tigers at Jo'burg zoo are like this. I had to walk away last time I was there.

I saw it a well.

Greed is at the root as usual.

I also saw a movie on Friday where a serval was kept as a pet. I believe this unsavoury practise is rife in USA.
