No problem MG. This is just a repository. If others have been luckier than you, that's how it goes. I thought this would be an alternative for looking for the big 5, which once you have seen leopard, is no challenge at all.

You must be quite the spotter BB

Maybe if you didnt 'poach' big five sightings from other tourists the big five would be a greater challenge to you.

Why not add civit to the list? Or are they also too easy to spot :o

Nah MLAM, the big 5 is the boring 5 except leopard for me. The rest are easy to spot in Kruger.

I would say north of the Olifants River. On October 3rd I saw three white rhinos 41 kms north of Shingwedzi! They were just east of the main drag. First sighting north of the Olifants for me.

Also managed all the cats and dogs (including Black-backed and Side-striped Jackal) between September 30 and October 4, with the sole exception of Caracal.

I've always found Caracal to be the trickiest feline in Kruger by far. Most of my sightings have been on Orpen night drives, with a few scattered sightings elsewhere.

Reminder for those going to Kruger over year end. Try this one instead of the boring big 5. So far nobody has claimed!

Hyenas look like dogs so please allow me some poetic licence here. Thanks.

Would trippers please post the following sightings per trip ended from 1 May 2007, supported by pics if possible. Let's see who gets the prize first.

The prize: seeing the full house should be prize enough . The first lucky blighter buys a road brick in My Acre of Africa with '6 cats 2 dogs' as a line on it, and places it on the S100. OK!

6 cats
Lion
Leopard
Cheetah
Serval
Caracal
African wild cat

2 dogs
Wild dog
Spotted hyena

This could serve for regulars as an alternative challenge to the big 5 mania, which one can realistically see before lunch on a good day.

Any objections, no I thought not, now let's go and look for them!

Since there are no serval in KTP how about Honey Badger. I know its not a cat, but why give the KTP types an easier challenge.

2
Brown hyena
Spotted hyena

I've done better on your challenge for KTP, than for the KNP one, BB

For KNP, I've only (ever) seen lion, leopard and cheetah, tho I have seen both "dogs" (this from my 2006 trip, only saw lion during my few days in KNP in 2007).

However, from my recent KTP trip, I've seen (almost) all the "cats" — except caracal, because I can't be certain that what whizzed across the Nossob road one late afternoon was a caracal, altho I doubt it could have been anything else :? And while I did see brown hyena on several occassions  , I did not see the spotties.

Cool idea, BB, and interesting to see how hard it is!

BB,

Although hyenas look and act a lot like dogs, hyenas and dogs aren't closely related. They are members of Family Hyaenidae (spotted hyenas, brown hyenas, striped hyenas, and aardwoves). Hyenas and dogs are probably so alike because they are both carnivores who feed on medium-sized antelope. But to get to the point they aren't dogs & should never be compared to the almighty african wild dog!

Many thanks for the info Mark. I issued the above disclaimer 4 posts above yours. When you next get to Kruger, tell us your score!
