Well folks, all too soon our trip came to an end and this is what we saw:

6 cats:
Lion (21)
Leopard (3)
Cheetah (1)
Serval (1)
Caracal :(
African Wild Cat (1)

2 dogs
Wild dog (3)
Spotted hyena (+-10)

So, on a single trip to Kruger we spotted 5/6 cats and 2/2 dogs, we also saw a Side-Striped Jackal though.....

I can't wait to start the challenge again soon (hopefully), great idea BB!! :D

Thanks cptp, it is more of a challenge than the boring big 5.

I agree BB, it puts a different spin on things to look for these animals, one could even include Jackals, like side-striped and black backed. That would give a nice variety of animals to look for. I hope that you do include those, 'cause then I'll have full marks in that category having seen both. :D I don't see jackals all that often any more....

Good idea cptp, I will consider it seriously. It would bolster the 'dog' side, but I am afraid you would have to start again.
Your 7 out of 8 will take a lot to beat. As I said in an earlier post, seeing that bunch is it's own reward and I am sure you agree with me, as a recently returned visitor.

I think to be fair, MG, you will have to compete weekly.

Just been to the Kruger for 28 nights:

4/6 Cats

Lion :D
Leopard :D
Cheetah :D
Caracal :(
Serval :(
African Wild Cat :D

2/2 Dogs

Wild Dog :D
Spotted Hyena :D

See my trip report: 28 Day Diary - Realtime at http://www.sanparks.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15747

I went to the Kruger in 2001 and saw all but Caracal  , pity the competition only started in May 2007 ... Cptp's trip survives!

Come Angels & Muskies,

A lot of you have just returned from the 2 major parks. How about letting us know how you did?

Hyena, "a dog"

BB, you are completely barking up the wrong animal! :?

Hyenas are not dogs, there have a completely unique genus and species :? Scientifically speaking they are actually more cat like than dog like. So it should be 7 cats and 1 dog.

Ag kommaan Mlambane, a bat of slack or poetic license or whatever you wish to call it is asked for here. Don't get too pedantic. You might cross swords with the king pedant.

It is just a challenge to get people off being big 5 verskrik (besotted)

actually the hyena's closest living relative is....the mongoose (learned that on a bush walk this year...when we saw some on a kill....hyenas, not mongooses/mongeese?!)
