The Kruger National Park’s (KNP) Protection Services Department which deals with the traffic and security issues in the park did not waste time on November 11, 2009 when they busted a cigarette smuggler who was driving a vehicle in the park that was carrying loads of counterfeit cigarettes. The incident took place at around 09:45 on the road from Pretoriuskop Rest Camp towards Numbi Gate.
According to the report by the Protection Services Manager, Mr Bheki Nsibande, the traffic officers Mr Amon Mhaule and Mr Amos Mkhabela were busy with their routine crime prevention and law enforcement road patrols when they noticed a vehicle heavily loaded, driving at high speed and stopped it.
The cigarette smuggler, whose name is known by the police, is a South African of Indian origin and confirmed that he was driving from Mozambique to smuggle cigarettes estimated to be worth ±R35 000 and was on his way to Nelspruit. He had noticed the police roadblock on the N4 road and to avoid it, decided to enter the park through the Malelane Gate and was to exit through Numbi Gate; using the park as a thoroughfare.
Protection Services has handed over the cigarette smuggler and consignment to Skukuza Police Station for further investigations.
